So, I just realized that I never posted my classroom pictures. Yes, school started in August and it is now almost February...better late than never?
This is probably the first year that I am truly happy with the way my room turned out. Last year I was in Montana the week before school so I felt rushed to get things ready, and every year before that I've had to switch rooms, which is always chaos.
Here is the finished product.
 |
| Reading Area with a Dr. Seuss poster that I made. |
 |
| another view of the reading center. |
 |
Reading Goal Bulletin Board with Chic-fil-A cow. As students get closer to their goal, they put a clothes-pin with their name on it on the ladder. |
 |
Encouraging students to be "bucket-fillers"--give compliments. Not sure where this idea first came from, but a lot of teachers at my school do it with their classes. The buckets now have students' names on them.
|
 |
| Stole this idea from pinterest. |
 |
| Grammar Island sentence. Our mascot is the marlins. |
 |
After students read a book, they fill out a recommendation card for the board. |
 |
| Writing Center |
 |
| Agenda Board. It's a little different now. |
 |
Calendar, "student center" (where they turn their papers in), and my desk.
|
 |
My favorite thing in the room. I've had this for a few years now. Pretty sure I first saw something similar to it in a book somewhere. I love it. |

| Welcome to 3G! |
Ask me if my room is still this clean. When I left today, I couldn't even see the wood of my desk.
Any of you educators have any teacher organizational tips??
I'm not a teacher so I am of no help for tips; however, if I had a 3rd grader, I would want him/her in your class! How super adorable and cheery! I also love your grandpa sign - too funny! (punctuation and spelling are my achilles heel - don't judge!) hehe
ReplyDeletewow your room is absolutely bright and fun!! So I also have cinder block walls....how do you stick things on it? I usually do but then it starts falling off...:-( I love your objective/agenda board...I am having a hard time figuring out how to write my objectives and not use up so much board space
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering the same thing. Sticky tack?
Deletehot glue!
DeleteHave you tried Mavalus Tape?
DeleteHave you tried poster putty? It works in my room! Mrs. McDonald's 4th Grade
DeleteStiki clips!
DeleteVelcro dots!
DeleteHOT GLUE all the way!!!!!
DeleteMasking tape with dots of Elmer's Glue on it! Works like a charm and you don't have paint coming off when you have to take the stuff down like you would with hot glue. :)
Delete3M makes exterior mounting tape (look at Office Depot, etc. I have had sound/letter cards on my walls for 10 years (cinder block) and not one was ever fallen off.
DeleteRubber cement works for smaller things too!
DeleteHot glue!!!
Deleteelectrical tape! or gorilla tape (the black electrical tape i bought at the dollar general for $3)
DeleteHockey tape- the clear kind. Will last all year!
DeleteI teach 3rd grade in Salina, Ks....I hot glue on my cinder block walls! It just peels off and leaves the paint. I am so drowning in paper, too! I lost todays homework and had to copy it again! Making the sugared bacon chicken today. I am always looking for good organization!
ReplyDeleteYour room is very colorful. I love it. :)
ReplyDeleteI love your room! I too teach third grade :) I love your milk crate benches - how did you make them??!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great room! Do you have a discipline policy? I have a 2nd grader and am looking everywhere for something...ANYTHING that will work!
ReplyDeleteMy biggest thing as a kindergarten teacher is consistancy. Also just like in baseball, three strikes and you're out. Sit down with your child and discuss the three things that will occur if they do not obey and as before, stick to it.
DeleteI teach 9th grade but this will probably still work for your kiddos... I use the "Please/I Need" method. The first time the student is doing something that they shouldn't be doing I say, "Please (name) sit down" and that is their warning. If they are still not on task I say "(name), I need you to sit in your seat. I will be contacting your parent" and I write their name down on my "to contact" list. If they still do not cooperate I start the process over, if they get to "I need" then it is a D-Hall. If we have to repeat the process they go to the office and a referral is written. A teacher down the hall used this method from day 1 last year and by the 2nd week all of the students knew that when he said "I need..." it meant business. Obviously the consequences might be different for your kiddos but the overall concept is easy for the students to understand.
DeleteI am a homeschool mom and I have used the grandpa thing, too! It makes a memorable point! If my son's third grade room had looked that colorful and inviting he might still be in public school! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm fairly certain this teacher pays for a majority of this out of pocket, maybe the teachers in your local schools can't afford it.
DeleteI love your classroom! I teach 4th grade and I am always looking for new ways to organize things. I did have one question. I like the Agenda board, but what are the squares for under the objectives?
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love your room! 2 things, in your reading center did you make those green and black chairs? They're wonderful! Also I believe the bucket idea comes from the book "Have You Filled a Bucket Today: A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids" I read it to my class and they loved it :)
ReplyDeleteand if you made those chairs, how did you?
DeleteHello. I really like your agenda board!! What did you use for background?
ReplyDeleteI am writing a personal behavior plan for my future classroom and I totally included the "Dear Students" letter in my plan.
ReplyDeleteI teach high school and I think my students need to hear your "Dear Students" letter even more this time of year. Saw the link on pinterest.
ReplyDeleteHi there,

I Want to be a Super Teacher
Where did you get (or how did you make) your "Read Mor Books" sign? I love that idea!
ReplyDeleteI made it! I just found a google image of the chick-fil-a cow and drew it. It was fun!
DeleteI felt like giving up on teaching after this year. It was a rough one but I am seeing ways I can make my classroom better. Thanks for sharing all these cool ideas.

ReplyDeleteLove your room! I am moving back to third grade after teaching 5th for a few years. Suggestion on how to stick to cinder blocks - try Easy up Wax Clips.
ReplyDeleteYour Have you filled a Bucket today idea is based on this bookhttp://www.amazon.com/Have-You-Filled-Bucket-Today/dp/1933916168. I've seen many schools use this and it works great.
ReplyDeleteI came across your blog on Pinetrist. I LOVE LOVE LOVE your classroom. I teach 2nd and I can def use some of your ideas! Thank you!

Sweet Seconds
I love your classroom it is so colorful and full of interesting things for your students to take part in.
ReplyDeleteI also love the way your room is set up. I am a little confused though. When do you have math, science and social studies?
ReplyDeleteI teach only English and Language Arts subjects. My teammate teaches Science, SS, and Math, and she is wonderful!
DeleteI love your classroom, great job. Question, how did you organize your books? By reading level? How do I find out what reading level certain books are on?
ReplyDeleteMy books are organized by genre and subject, however most of them are labeled by Lexile, which you can look up on Lexile.com. You just type in the book's title, and it should give you the Lexile.

DeleteIn your reading corner, did you make the little black and green seats? If you did, would you mind sharing how you did it? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteyes, wondering the same thing. It looks like they are made from crates but how did you make and attach the cushions?
DeleteHello! Yes, I made the crate seats. However, I kind of did it the wrong way, but they served their purpose and held up all year. Here is the link to my post on how I made them:

Your classroom is beautiful - so calming and organized. How did you make the puffy balls ? hanging from the ceiling - they add just enough "punch" without overstimulating.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering the same! They are at etsy.com and called poms :). Also, party city had some colors.
DeleteLove your room!
ReplyDeleteLove the blue and green! Thanks for posting pictures!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love your classroom! I am a secondary teacher-9th graders and I would love to organize my classroom in this same form. I love colors and my students do also!
ReplyDeleteThe book is "How Full is Your Bucket for kids" by Tom Rath. http://www.amazon.com/How-Full-Your-Bucket-Kids/dp/1595620273/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1340819725&sr=8-1&keywords=how+full+is+your+bucket+for+kids
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Your classroom - so bright & cheery! The puff balls hanging from the ceiling are absolutely adorable! I teach 1st grade and would love to add them to my classroom this year; can you send me the link to how you made them?

Love your classroom. I am trying to promote reading in 8th grade and I just love your Chick-Fil-A bulletin board.
ReplyDeleteDid you use a template for the Chick-Fil-A Cow and "Read Mor Books"?
Thanks!
I am speechless! As a special education teaching assistant who has worked in some very disorganized classrooms - Wow! you are a blessing to all students. Structured, organized, positive, and cheerful! Are you in need of an assistant? :)
ReplyDeleteLove your classroom!
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog through pinterest and am now a new follower. :-)

Love your Gamecock mat!!!! We keep up with the Gamecock scores in my third grade class!! A little math incorporation there! I supposedly had a class with 20 Gamecock fans... if there were any Clemson fans out there, bless them, they wouldn't admit it! ;)
ReplyDeleteHi there! I love your classroom! I have tissue poms over my reading area as well! l like how they can brighten any room! I just found your blog and just started following you! If you have time stop by my blog and follow! Thanks for sharing!

I loved your letter to the students. I modified it slightly and plan to hang it in my room this year. There is a photo of what I did (and a link back to this post) in this blog post: http://sjsdblogs.com/coughlin/2012/07/18/making-students-feel-welcome/
ReplyDeleteThanks!

I love your book recommendation board! I am totally stealing this to use with my 9th grade babies when they do SSR! They always complain that they don't know what book to pick out in the library and hopefully this will help!
ReplyDeleteI also love your grammar sentence on the wall, so simple yet effective! I will be adding this to my August to do list!
Thank you for the wonderful ideas!
I'm a Taiwanese student studying in the US. I found your blog on Pinterest. Your classroom is so wonderful and inspiring! I would love to share your classroom with other Taiwanese people in my own blog, which is written in Chinese because of the target audience. Would you mind if I use your pictures here and write about your classroom in Chinese? I will, of course, post a link that directs people back to your blog.
ReplyDeleteBest,
Christine
I LOVE your room and am going to use a LOT of your ideas in my 5th Gr ELAR classroom this year. I had a few questions, and I apologize if they are somewhere on your blog that I missed:
ReplyDelete1. For your Moovin' Up board, is the ladder paper? or something else- I am wondering what they clip the clothespins to?
2. For the writersin the spotlight area, are the 3 things actually black clipboards hanging up?
3. For that same area, where did you find lime and turquoise tubs and cups etc?
Thanks so much! I would love to hear!
LOVE your room, but that one rug, the one with the awful Gamecock on it, has to GO!!! Just kidding - a loyal Tiger fan, obviously. Your room is so precious and organized - where do you teach with so much wall space??? I have ZERO walls!
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the chick fil a cow sign? Did you get that from the restaurant? I love the cow but just wondering where you got it.
ReplyDeleteI love your classroom. I like to see what's going on in other third grade classrooms. You have the same colors as I do. :)
ReplyDeleteLove "fill the bucket" board! Where did you get the buckets? Did students write compliments to each other and slip them it?
ReplyDeleteThanks
Great ideas but in the sentence "The huge marlin...," the word "the" is an article not an adjective.
ReplyDeleteHi! I would love to know where you got the bucket pictures for your "Have you filled your bucket today?" I am planning on implementing this for the new school year!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Your room is AMAZING.
Great ideas :) The bucket filling idea is in the book "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?" by Carol McCloud
ReplyDeleteWhat does the poster above you desk (w/ blue border) say? It's hard to read in the pics... Very cute room!!
ReplyDeleteI love you bucket idea/poster! It is great. What a positive teacher and memory you must be leaving with the students. The name Dalrymple sounds familiar. Are you in MN?
ReplyDeleteHow did you make those benches in the reading center? Looks like crates with toppers? Very cute...your whole room is wonderful!!
